This post could really be called, “How to Naturally Heal From Uterine Fibroids, Infertility, PCOS, Ovarian Cysts, Endometriosis, Horribly Painful Menstrual Cramps, And All Things Wrong With the Female Reproductive System.” Even though this article can apply to all the above, for the sake of this post, I’ll just focus on the topic at hand.
Wanna know something crazy? According to a study published in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on uterine fibroids, 20 percent to 80 percent of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime. That same study found that up to a whopping 90% of African-American women will grow these benign tumors in her uterus! NINETY PERCENT. So, if you’re African-American and you’re reading this, you most like have this condition yourself, or you know and love someone who does, it’s just that prevalent.
If you’re reading this and you one of the women who battle with fibroids, then most likely you’re feeling a few things.
- Tired of fighting the fight
- Frustrated
- Scared
- Stressed
- Desperate
Who could understand how you feel better than someone who actually fought that battle? Someone who is still fighting that battle? I’ve been there, so I know those feelings. You’re tired of having to deal with the issues that fibroids keep bringing into your life. You’re sick of worrying and stressing about it. More than anything, you just want your health back so you can move on with your life.
The good news is there is hope. You don’t have to continue to suffer from the tumors in your uterus, and there are alternative ways of restoring your uterus back to health without surgery. I wrote a separate post greatly detailing uterine fibroids. It’s important that you understand exactly the condition that you’re battling: what it is, what causes it, who it affects (though we covered some of that already), and what your treatment options are. Most of the time with Western
Upon diagnosis, surgery such as a myomectomy or hysterectomy is almost always recommended. Second runner-up following recommended surgery is prescription pills like birth control to treat the symptoms of fibroids. BELIEVE ME, I understand the emotional and physical pain associated with having fibroids. Not only have I dealt with painful cramps and even cramping in between my cycles, but the women I’ve coached have also all complained of pain. It’s a common side-effect of fibroids, that unfortunately, doctors want to treat with birth control. Sometimes, when the pain gets so bad, you want nothing more than to alleviate it with some prescription pills, but I’d advise you to rethink birth control as an option. I’ve taken birth control. It may ease your cramps, but it does far more damage to your body than the fibroids do. It’s truly a hormone disruptor, and you’re making your fibroids worse by taking it.
But, fear not. I’m here for you. There is a better way to restore your body back to optimal functionality. Depending on your symptoms, invasive treatment, like surgery, can be a helpful, but it’s not your only option for fibroid treatment. There are natural healing methods that will help you to balance your hormones, and restore your reproductive health.
Fail-Safe Strategies For Fixing Fibroids
If you have uterine fibroids, your hormones are out of balance. You have too much of the estrogen hormone in your body, and that’s what’s causing the problem. Fix your estrogen overload, and you fix your uterine fibroids.
In order to naturally heal from fibroids and kick their painful symptoms to the curb, you must–and I cannot stress this enough–begin to make healthier lifestyle changes. You can’t hope to get new results by continuing to do the same things that got you into this predicament in the first place. Different, healthier approaches to your life is a must.
So, how do you do this? I’ll show you how.
Here are the things to address in order to begin healing naturally from uterine fibroids:
Your Diet
Does any of this food frequently find itself on your plate? If so, it’s hurting you and your chances of healing naturally.
You have to start eating food that supports the liver, bowel, and endocrine health. Eating food that helps cleanses the blood and relieve constipation so that excess estrogen can be eliminated is vital. You cannot heal naturally from uterine fibroids if your diet is not one that supports healing. You need to increase your progesterone hormone levels so that they’re not dominated by estrogen, and a large part of doing that is determined by what you eat.
As I mentioned on my Instagram page, Cutting out all animal flesh, dairy, and fried food is very important. All of these foods disrupts hormonal health. The hormones in dairy and meat (yes, this includes seafood) are estrogenic (meaning they contain estrogen), and this is not good for someone who is already dealing with estrogen-dominance.
There is no way around this, but it’s so worth it. This step is way too important to ignore. There are so many women who opted for a myomectomy (the surgical removal of fibroids from your uterus), but they did not change their diet. And guess what? Those fibroids came right back again, and their symptoms were worse than before the surgery! A lot of these women come to me for coaching to help them clean up their diet so they can conquer their food addiction, and help them get to the root cause of their womb illnesses.
In order to get and remain free of diseases of the reproductive system, you must consistently eat food that supports healing. Don’t think about what you’re losing. Think about what you’re gaining. Your health. Falling in love with eating delicious, and healthy food. And you’re gaining control over your flesh so that you’re no longer dominated by food. In doing so, you won’t be as weak when faced with unhealthy food choices. This discipline is what’s going to keep you on track in this healthy lifestyle.
Here’s what you do to start:
- Clean out your fridge and cabinets of the unhealthy, processed foods that are attacking your body, and disrupting your hormones. The cookies, commercial chips, enriched, bleached white flour, and oil that isn’t grapeseed, avocado, coconut, red palm, or olive needs to go. Eliminate products in them that you cannot pronounce. DO NOT BUY these items. Don’t surround yourself with temptation. You’re setting yourself up to fail. Replace the food you threw away with plenty of raw, whole foods.
- Eliminate unhealthy hybrid food. One of the biggest sources of confusion about healthy food is hybrid foods. Hybrid foods are GMO or genetically modified food that does not occur naturally. A great way to tell if a fruit is genetically modified is if it does not have seeds. Fruit such as watermelon, grapes, key limes and lemons, oranges, and even pineapples are all supposed to have seeds. If they do not, they’re hybrid fruits. Seedless fruit is devoid of the vital nutrients that their seeded, unaltered fruit actually contain. And, it stresses your body to actually eat them, because now the body has to process the food and find a way to get rid of the toxins they bring. Synthetically derived copies of natural substances will almost always have negative side-effects. So, eat wild fruit and vegetables instead.
Your Toxin Overload
In order to balance your hormones and heal from uterine fibroids, in addition to nourishing your body with lots of raw, healing food, you must detox your body, from the excess toxins it’s loaded with.
I wrote a post about detoxing, and even showed you guys how to do one! In the post, I teach you that a good detox must address your bowels.
Your bowels are one of your body’s primary channels of elimination. Your bowels don’t just eliminate food waste. It eliminates old hormones that your body has already used, too. And if you suffer from constipation, the longer those deactivated hormones and toxins sit in your system, polluting your system. You need to get it out, and now is the perfect time to do it.
Internal cleansing is critical. Since we know the cause of uterine fibroids is estrogen-dominance, the very last thing we need is a gut full of used, deactivated hormones, unable to be expelled from our systems. The longer they sit there, the greater the chance of the body reactivating them. They then get reabsorbed back into your bloodstream, and the cycle of disease starts all over again.
If you have uterine fibroids, then you need a raw-food detox. If you’ve already done one and you’re still suffering from fibroids, then wait a while (anywhere from 3 months to a year depending on how intense the detox was), and do another one. Most people need to detox at least once a year.
When you’re detoxing, eat easily digestible food. Raw food such as green leafy greens, tomatoes, zucchini, salads, and fruit are amazing. Your food truly is medicine if you use it properly. Also, drink plenty of water. Drinking water will help hydrate your stools so your bowels can eliminate those toxins. Drink plenty of water whether you’re detoxing or not. A good measuring tool for drinking water is half your body weight in ounces of natural spring water a day. So, if you weigh 120 pounds, the amount of water you’d drink a day is 60 oz of water. You can also monitor your urine. If your urine is a clear to pale yellow, you’re pretty hydrated.
Also, while you’re detoxing, adding some supplements that will help you detox would be very helpful. This lifestyle is expensive enough. Sometimes a discount is a big help. That’s why I’ve listed some places below where you can find high quality and affordable herbs. The exact same herbs I use in my very own healing journey. I do not put my name on anything that I have not tried out or would not try out myself. The following herbs are very useful in helping with fibroid symptoms and even eradicating the
- Cat’s Claw If you click here at Iherb and enter my code: XOW857 on any of the herbs you need, you’ll get a 10% discount off your order if you’re a first time customer. You could order the remaining supplements on this site, though their tinctures tend to sell out fast. If they’re sold out of tinctures, you can definitely find them on Amazon.
- Sarsaparilla or here
- Dandelion or here
- Raspberry Leaf or here
- Raw organic ginger (you can find this at your local grocery store. Be sure it’s raw and ORGANIC)
- Turmeric (same as the ginger)
This list isn’t all inclusive, but these herbs are great for helping the body to detox. These herbs may be a little more potent in tincture (or liquid) form, but taken in tea or capsule form is good too. RAW, cleansing food combined with healing supplements go a long way towards helping your body heal naturally from fibroids.
Surrounding Chemicals
By now it’s becoming common knowledge that prescription drugs are being over-prescribed, and in most cases, are actually hurting you more than
But what about other chemicals? What about the chemicals we come in contact with every day, but don’t think twice about? Do you burn mainstream candles or have air-freshener plug-ins in your home? Do you wear perfume? What kind of chemicals are in these products?
While we can’t really help the air we breathe, and can’t always purify the water we bathe and swim in, there are still ways we can reduce the number of toxic substances we come in contact with. We don’t always pay attention to the chemicals we’re surrounded by, but the truth is, we really should. Recent studies have strongly indicated that endocrine-disrupting chemicals are related to the development of fibroids. Things we don’t think twice about but use every day, like soap, deodorant, toothpaste, body moisturizers, and hair products can be loaded with chemicals that may be slowing or even hindering our chances of healing. It’s important that while you’re healing, you reduce–preferably even–eliminate as many toxic pollutants as you possibly can.
Ladies, many of the ingredients in beauty products today aren’t all that pretty. In fact, personal care products contain industrial chemicals, ranging from reproductive toxins, carcinogens, hormone disruptors, pesticides, and heavy metals. Notice some serious red flags in that list? Remember, our skin is an organ, capable of absorbing anything you put on it. In the past, you may not have paid much attention to this, but now that you’re trying to help your body heal naturally from fibroids, it’s becoming more imperative that you do. You don’t want to introduce more hormone-disrupting agents into your body and add more problems to what you’re already dealing with.
Find you some good, natural products. As you should do with your food, you should always pay attention to the ingredients in your personal care products. Learning how to recognize the ingredients to avoid in beauty care products is very important.
Here’s a partial list of ingredients to look out for and what to opt for instead:
- Parabens. Parabens are used in quite a bit of cosmetics and hair products as a preservative. It’s a suspected endocrine-disrupter. Look for natural cosmetics, and hair products that are paraben-free.
- Fragrance (Parfum). According to studies (and my own personal experience), parfum ingredients can often trigger headaches, dizziness, allergies, and asthma. It’s often found in perfumes, shampoos, soaps, and even hidden in products listed as Unscented. It’s also known as Phthalates, and it’s a common chemical found in household cleaning products, too. It’s even found in toilet paper. These ingredient labels are tricky. Use simpler products with a shorter ingredient list. Do your best to avoid all products with fragrance, parfum, and phthalates in them.
- Paraphenylenediamine (PPD). This is a chemical substance found in permanent hair color and other dyes. When looking for permanent and vibrant hair color, opt for henna instead. Henna is a natural dye from the plant Lawsonia inermis. It contains none of the harmful chemicals that traditional hair dyes do, yet it’s permanent and is beautiful in color.
Other noted chemicals that should be avoided at all costs are aluminum, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, lead, and mercury.
I’m not perfect in this area either. Again, we’re surrounded by chemically-laden products. Some blatantly listed as an ingredient, and others you’d have to be a chemist in order to recognize. Just do the best you can with eliminating your use of as many products with harsh, harmful chemicals in them as possible.
How You Handle Stress
So many women that I’ve coached–myself included–have recalled that our fibroids started to develop during particularly stressful times in our lives.
Stress is a chemical reaction that we experience as a result of the daily pressures of life. It doesn’t matter if the stress is good, such as being blessed with the opportunity to work on a highly-anticipated project, or if the stress is bad, such as a loved-one falling ill and you’ve suddenly become their caretaker, which brings a slew of new nerve-wracking emotions into your life.
Countless people are faced with stressful situations in their lives. Having to care for ailing family members can sometimes take nearly everything out of you. I know, because I have first-hand experience with this. The stress of school, deadlines from work, spouse-stuff, kids, lack of finances, are all very common stressors in our lives.
In reality, stress is also very commonly triggered by good things that are overwhelming us, such as planning a wedding or event, our own birthdays and the ensuing birthday parties, growing or changing a demanding career, and/or stepping out of your comfort zone into new things. These are all great things that happen in our lives, but they can cause stress due to our high and unreal expectations, and our fears and anxieties.
On top of all that, women with fibroids are often stressed about the health of their uterus, and their body symptoms. They wonder what can they do to help their bodies heal. They suffer monthly with painful menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding, and some even battle infertility because of fibroids. This is so unfair because it’s a very human thing to do to worry about your health, but doing so makes your health situation worse!
We all know stress is bad. We all want to get a handle over it in our lives, but we may struggle with how to go about doing so. Women need to be taught how to deal with everyday stress in our lives. Learning how to deal with stress is a gift that keeps on giving. You can teach stress-management to your daughters, sons, grandkids, spouse, and so on.
Here’s where you start:
Stop. Breathe. Exhale.
My friend, Gessie has given me some awesome advice on handling stress. She taught me how to utilize my breathing to help me stop stress at its onset, and release tension from my body.
Control your breathing:
- For one minute or two, begin silencing your mind. This may be a challenge in the beginning. Silencing the mind means to kill the noise. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.
- After silencing your mind for two minutes or so, start your breathing exercises. Take a deep breath in while counting in your head, “One-thousand one, One-thousand two.” Your stomach should be full of air.
- Exhale while counting in your head, “One-thousand one, One-thousand two, One-thousand three, One-thousand four.”
- As you breathe, allow your body to let go of all the tension, which is stress. We ladies usually store tension in our abdomen. Feel your belly relaxing. It’ll feel weird at first, but the more you do it, the more natural it becomes. This is actually our natural state of being.
- Start praying or meditating on Bible scriptures. If you can’t think of any scriptures, look some up in the Bible or online regarding stress and anxiety.
You want to start living from a place of rest and peace. In order to do that, you have to intentionally release the stress you’re carrying.
Following these principles consistently is what’s going to take you from where you are now in your journey with fibroids, to the victory over them on the other side. It is a lifestyle change, and you can do it. The lifestyle may be a bit of a challenge at times, but so is anything worth having. And your womb health is 1,000% worth it.
